What modern society completely lacks is the place of God and any greater transcendent values. Life is not a simple mechanical process. While there are parts of life that are mechanical, there exists an intangible dimension to life that remains out of reach of humans. Many convince themselves that this dimension doesn’t exist. It requires having faith in something higher than yourself. Humans have only a certain span of time on the earth, but Christ reigns forever. Whenever I mention the name of Christ, it always makes me somewhat uncomfortable. This is primarily because of the type of man he claimed to be is what makes me and many others uncomfortable at the mention of his name. I’ve always believed in him, but it’s easy to fall into doubt or uncertainty about his claims. Working through doubt and uncertainty is part of the process itself.
The mechanical aspects in life serve the higher ones. There is a symmetry and pattern to things in life, like the Fibonacci sequence. There is a beauty to the creation that we have around us. If our world was the product of random chance entirely, you wouldn’t see any sort of order or beauty to it, just total randomness. Complexity is evidence of a higher world. In a society without Christ, people live without any greater moral weight to any of their actions, and have no firm direction of where to go. Atheist’s want to explain everything in life as being explainable by science, and are themselves certain that God doesn’t exist. While we can describe many things in our world with science, many things are outside the realm of science. There exists no formula or sequence to explain how love works, it is an intangible thing. Science is simply an explanation of the mechanics and sequences of the universe. It isn’t supposed to tell us the origin of the universe itself, just like how apologists and theologians aren’t supposed to be scientists who have debates about the age of the universe. As Christians, we don’t know the timetable in which the universe was created, there are no timestamps in the bible. The important fact is that God created everything, not the time in which he decided to create.
