Recently, AI has been in the news and there has been a lot of back and forth talk about it. It has been both criticized and praised. While there are a lot of things to hate about AI, I think that it’s advancement is inevitable and that no amount of regulations are going to be able to stop it’s continued advancement. We have to be realistic about it. My firm belief is that AI is here to stay and that what we are going through with AI is similar to what American society experienced in the early 1900’s with the rise of the car industry. Many people tried to stop or put regulations on that industry and it failed. Now, cars are one of the biggest industries worldwide. AI will reshape society in negative and positive ways. We can’t stop the advancement of AI, but we can use it properly.

To begin with, I don’t think it will replace art entirely. What makes fiction such as well-written films or books great is the human element behind it which is something that is lost with AI. I don’t think we will lose that. I think at some point AI made media might become popular, but it will become so ubiquitous actual human media will be more valued than what an AI made. The authenticity will be what people want and will become the main draw. When it comes to more objective work like medical writing and mathematics, AI seems to excel at it. Several key industries will become more reliant on using AI to perform complex calculations. All the advancements in AI will also create more jobs to do with the programming and design of such systems.

A negative effect of AI is that it is effective at combining data on such a mass scale across all the data it has access to. This could allow governments to more effectively surveil the population in a easier and more convenient way. It is a possibility that people would rather not think about but will become more and more of a reality in the future. What they will do with all this data isn’t fully known. Future governments then may become more reliant on technology to keep an eye on people in the public.

Overall, AI is set to reshape American society in both good and bad ways. One thing for certain is that now AI has been released we can’t go back. While I’ll never use AI to write anything, it will reshape everything in society.
